Search for "ruqyah water" and you will find bottles for sale, "powerful" oils, special blends at special prices, some shipped from overseas with promises on the label.

You do not need any of it. Water from your own tap and olive oil from your own kitchen, recited over with your own voice, is exactly what the people of knowledge describe. This article shows how.

Why recite over water and oil at all?

The Quran describes itself as healing:

"And We send down of the Quran that which is healing and mercy for the believers." — Quran 17:82

"O mankind, there has come to you instruction from your Lord and healing for what is in the breasts." — Quran 10:57

The Prophet (peace be upon him) recited and blew. Every night he would cup his hands, blow into them, recite Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas, and wipe over as much of his body as he could, three times (Sahih al-Bukhari 5017). Reciting over water and oil carries that same recitation to something you can drink, bathe with, or rub on, and many scholars from the early generations onward permitted it.

The Sunnah also uses water directly in healing. For the evil eye, the Prophet (peace be upon him) told the person who had looked to wash, and that water was poured over the one affected (Sunan Ibn Majah 3509).

Two things are special in themselves before anything is recited over them:

  • Zamzam. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said of it: "It is blessed, and it is food that nourishes" (Sahih Muslim 2473), and "The water of Zamzam is for whatever it is drunk for" (Sunan Ibn Majah 3062).
  • Olive oil. He said: "Eat olive oil and anoint yourselves with it, for it comes from a blessed tree" (Jami at-Tirmidhi 1851), and the Quran calls it "a blessed olive tree" (24:35).

Honey and black seed are also mentioned for healing: honey "in it is healing for people" (Quran 16:69), and black seed "is a cure for every disease except death" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5688).

What to recite

Keep to the Quran and the authentic duas. The core is:

  • Al-Fatiha. A Companion recited it over a man who had been stung, and he recovered; the Prophet (peace be upon him) asked, "How did you know it is a ruqyah?" (Sahih al-Bukhari 5736)
  • Ayat al-Kursi (2:255)
  • The last two verses of Al-Baqarah (2:285-286)
  • Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas, three times each

You can add other verses of healing and the duas of ruqyah from the Sunnah; the full ruqyah method is here. What you should not add is anything you do not understand: numbers, names you cannot identify, or words someone gave you without a source.

How to prepare ruqyah water

  1. Make wudu, and make your intention for healing from Allah alone.
  2. Fill a clean bottle or jug with ordinary water, or Zamzam if you have it. Open the lid.
  3. Hold it close to your mouth and recite the verses above.
  4. After each recitation, blow lightly over the water. This is a gentle breath, not spitting.
  5. Close it and keep it somewhere clean and respectful.

When it runs low, you can top it up with plain water, or simply recite over a fresh bottle. There is nothing wrong with reciting again every few days.

How to use it

  • Drink a few sips morning and evening, saying Bismillah.
  • Wipe your face and head with a little of it.
  • Bathe with it: mix some into a bucket of water and pour it over yourself. Many people do this in the shower. Some scholars preferred that it not go directly into a toilet, so if you can, bathe where the water drains away cleanly.
  • For children, a few sips and a light wipe is enough. For nazar on children, see this guide.

How to prepare and use ruqyah oil

  1. Use plain olive oil. Extra virgin is fine. You do not need a special blend.
  2. Recite over it exactly as with water, blowing lightly after each recitation.
  3. Rub a little on the head, chest, or any place of pain, before sleep or after bathing.
  4. Some people take a small spoon of the oil with food. That is a matter of preference, not a requirement.

Be careful: do not put oil in the eyes, ears or any wound. If you have sensitive skin, test a small patch first. Black seed oil is strong and can irritate the skin; dilute it with olive oil.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Paying large sums for bottled water or oil. Nothing in the Sunnah makes a stranger's bottle stronger than your own sincere recitation. If someone tells you only their oil will work, read these warning signs.
  • Mixing in things you cannot identify. Ink, saffron writings, powders or herbs from an unknown source can be harmless, harmful, or impermissible, and you have no way of knowing which.
  • Stopping medication. Ruqyah water does not replace medicine. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said every disease has a cure (Sahih al-Bukhari 5678); use both.
  • Expecting it to work like a switch. Ruqyah is a means. The healing is from Allah, and consistency matters more than intensity.
  • Treating it as an object of power in itself. The water is not magic. It carries the words of Allah, and that is where its blessing comes from.

How we work

We do not sell bottled water or oils, and we will not tell you that yours is not strong enough. We do not do sihr or tilsam, and we do not work with jinn.

What we do is read what you write about your situation, tell you which verses and duas to recite, with their sources, and tell you plainly when it sounds like a doctor should see it first. If you would like that, you can share your situation privately here.
